OVER 18? Very much so.
CHARACTERS IN-GAME: Jin Guangyao (mdzs).
▶ CHARACTER
NAME: Shang Yu.
CANON: Oh! My emperor.
CANON POINT: Just after his death in the last few episodes of season 2.
AGE: 17. He's old enough to drink wine but is often referred to in the show by his young age.
BACKGROUND:
Zodiac Land. Star Masters. All sounds a bit bizarre, but these are the concepts of the world Shang Yu comes from. This country is almost like an old Chinese fantasy world, one with little technology but a system of powers unique to it. There is the emperor (always a particular star sign who rules for a thousand years, in this instance Capricorn), a government and then the 12 Star Masters, each one a leading representative of a star sign and each one having their own strong, unique power. Cancer can turn invisible, Sagittarius can wield fire, and in Shang Yu's case as Aries Star Master he has super speed. There is a thirteenth sign in all of this; Ophiuchus. They are known as outcasts who can heal others and are treated as second rate citizens and criminals within Zodiac Land. Luo FeiFei is the master of the Ophiuchus.
Shang Yu is the youngest of the twelve and is often found watching others and trying to learn what he can. He's first seen when a young woman from modern China is pulled out of the water, his eyes being covered by Su Xunxian since her attire was considered improper. He's shown to be liked by all the Star Masters and looked after too, later watching Beitang Moran and Su Xunxian playing board games and trying to learn what he can from the strategies being put down. He doesn't seem to think much of Luo FeiFei, the young woman who sweeps into their world like a whirlwind, he's too busy trying to learn his own things. It just doesn't help that his other fellow fire signs (Sagittarius and Leo) are both their own unique brands of ...strange. When it comes to a competition between the elements, the fire team actually loses as they are too busy on the day eating and drinking wine at a special meal, all three of them believing the competition to be at another day.
It sets the tone for the fire symbols and their relationship. All of the Star Masters are a team of 12, but often they gravitate towards their own little groups by element; Shang Yu with the other fire signs, Beitang Tang the Pisces will hang with the other water signs etc.
As things seem to get serious between Luo FeiFei and the emperor Beitang Yi, Shang Yu is often seen in the background with others, rarely being at the forefront of that particular story line until later on in the series. Soon it becomes apparent that the neighbouring land of Orion land have issues with Zodiac Land and during an outing Shang Yu notices his fire comrade Xifeng Lie being kidnapped by people unknown. Instead of running to get help, Shang Yu impulsively decides there's no time, managing to take out one of the guards and stealing their uniform so he can follow this crew in an attempt to find a good time to dive in and save his bestie. Unfortunately there just doesn't seem to be a good time and Shang Yu finds himself travelling with this group of people (some Orionlanders and a group of prisoners) across the desert. He even stops at an outpost, taking the chance to get his friend out of there only to find he is drugged on something and becomes violent when awake. He has to knock Xifeng Lie back out, following the group when they start travelling again only to be caught out by the one in charge, stabbed and left for dead in the sand.
Orion land have held a grudge against Zodiac Land since the latter defeated them ten years ago. They're causing people to go insane through a liquid concoction they are giving them, making the Ophiuchus scapegoats for a lot of things in recent times. It's too easy for them to set frenzied Ophiuchus upon Zodiac Land and letting them take the blame.
Through a stroke of luck, Shang Yu manages to regain consciousness after some time, staggering the long distance back to Zodiac Land to tell the others of what happened. The information is shocking and useful, but not enough to get Shang Yu out of trouble for being so impulsive. When he is next seen, it's sitting in Bai Wuchen's class with young children around him, obviously put there to be kept under watch by the other Star Masters when they can.
Soon enough, Shang Yu starts coming out of his shell some. He spends time asking Su Xunxian about how someone finds true love, obviously interested in the concept after seeing Luo FeiFei and Beitang Yi falling for each other. He points out he's seen Su Xunxian and Beitang Moran together before hastily changing his words to something else (proving that he can be perceptive when he wants) and eventually Su Xunxian takes the teenager to a pleasure house to get some kind of understanding. It's not really successful in the sense that Shang Yu is oblivious, asking instead to see the top courtesan and passing a trivia test to find out said top courtesan is actually Su Xunxian.
Not that he seems overly shocked by any of that.
The quest for true love is put to one side when the mission to save Xifeng Lie begins. He travels with Beitang Tang to Orion land to save the other, winding up getting captured along with TangTang as part of the "plan". After a fight, he's told to rush Xifeng Lie back to Zodiac Land whilst TangTang deals with the rest. Shang Yu doesn't need to be told twice, he does just that, somewhat horrified to learn that when he uses superspeed involving another person like that the person can only react in slow motion to everything for a short while after.
Xifeng Lie's life is apparently suffering.
Soon things seem to get back to some kind of semblance of normal for Shang Yu. He's unaware of the ongoing plot on the inside by Orion land to bring Zodiac Land down. He's absolutely interested when a swarm of insects take over and they're declared by Luo FeiFei to be "lobsters" and end up totally delicious. He even sits with TangTang, FeiFei and Su Xunxian, helping to make lobster dumplings for everyone. The Aries is absolutely enjoying life back now. Even Xifeng Lie starts to catch up with the rest of them.
Eventually things start happening a short while before the actual wedding. It's a double event as not only is Luo FeiFei marrying Beitang Yi, but Beitang Tang has managed to become betrothed in an arranged marriage to a young woman from Orion land called Xia Bing (someone TangTang had fallen in love with during the daring rescue earlier). Everything seems great. Except there are obviously shenanigans afoot. At some point in the evening Shang Yu tells Su Xunxian and Xifeng Lie that he's going to take Xia Bing a present, a kind of peace offering to show no hard feelings from him (despite being stabbed and left for dead by the Orion land king in the desert). Xifeng Lie offers to go with him and Shang Yu says it's fine, heading out on his own only to overhear the Orionland crew talking about how they're going to kill everyone at the wedding using poisoned wine. At this point Shang Yu's inexperience kicks in again; instead of running back to tell everyone he freezes and is caught out by the Orion land crew. He's not found until a while after, everyone looking for the youngster once again only to find his corpse laying in a pool of blood having been bludgeoned in the head by the Orion land men. Luckily for the others, the last thing Shang Yu does is write the word wedding in his own blood before he dies, alerting everyone to the fact that something is about to go down. This is the point that Shang Yu will be coming from in regards to canon point.
After this, things escalate wildly. The Star Masters are obviously upset at what has happened, trying to take the Orion land crew down. They are defeated two by two until only Beitang Moran and Beitang Yi are left. The one in charge has managed to possess the body of Beitang Tang, fighting the other two with it. Meanwhile everyone has drunk the poisoned wine and died. It's all one big mess and getting worse when both the Emperor and Beitang Moran are also killed. TangTang manages to get control long enough to take out the Orion land enemy, leaving only FeiFei and the Ophiuchus.
She doesn't even hesitate; FeiFei tells the others to start healing people and the Ophiuchus manage to bring everyone back, Star Masters included, at the cost of the Ophiuchus and herself all vanishing. FeiFei awakens back in modern day China and eventually meets a modern day Beitang Yi, showing that the Star Masters are not only reincarnated but have their memories too, making it a typical happy ending.
PERSONALITY:
Shang Yu is absolutely the epitome of an Aries and quite rightly too. He's a stubborn sort, one who is determined to do what he believes he must no matter what. He'll do it even if it means he gets into trouble for it, shown when he realises his comrade is being abducted. He believes his action in following them is right and he keeps on following them, even when it starts to look like doing so may not get him the results he initially wanted. He can also be a bit blunt, though that's more age and inexperience kicking in than anything. Shang Yu is seventeen and hasn't quite learned the ability of tact or the fact that sometimes honesty is not the best policy. Even when he's in trouble for not showing up for the competition he's the first to admit that it was his fault and doesn't argue the punishment given. The honesty can also work in his favour though; most understand that it would have to be an extreme circumstance for Shang Yu to tell an outright lie. There's little point in doing such things and it's not to his taste; he's more of a kick the door down person than a sneak in through the window. Secrecy is not his thing nor is it his best ability no matter how hard he tries.
The Aries is the baby of the group and treated as such by all of the Star Masters. Shang Yu shows no resentment towards this at all, content to just forge his own path at his own pace. It doesn't stop him from having a laugh with others (normally the other fire signs), but being the youngster means he can be coddled at times, shielded from terrible sights and truths on the basis of it being "not for young eyes". That is changing though; Shang Yu is perceptive enough to call people out on things and to also decide what he wants to do. When he seems the Emperor and Luo FeiFei falling in love he makes the decision that he wants to know more. He has an understanding on who to ask to get the best results and even shows a cheeky side in asking for something to be free when normally it's charged for.
That being said, being inexperienced and also impulsive gets Shang Yu into trouble that eventually winds up fatal. In he end he freezes, not thinking to use his powers to get him out of the situation and paying the price for it. He can sometimes find it hard to focus on information when a lot of it is being given, can fidget a lot when sitting still for too long and would rather be on the move than staying in the same place for long periods of time if there's nothing else around to distract him. He's a typical speedster in that sense and that coupled with Aries traits can be problematic for him. At one point he is given five books to read as a favour by Su Xunxian, however later on it is revealed he only read the first book and not the others. Shang Yu opts for a more hands on and practical learning than a sitting a reading books kind of learning it seems, that or he's simply a bit embarrassed by the nature of the books he's given.
Other than that, Shang Yu comes across as a well-mannered young man, one more curious about things and willing to ask outright than not wanting to be a bother. He speaks his mind in a way that most would consider it a positive rather than a negative and he obviously cares for the other Star Masters They are family, they look after him and it's something the teenager understands and returns in whatever way he can. He also shows a slight maturity when wanting to give the Orion land crew a gift despite having been stabbed by the King and left for dead. His resilience in not dying and determination to get back after that event in one piece is also a major asset and trait, showing that if someone is going to take him out it has to be a swift and sure hit (which it eventually was). Even when Shang Yu is dying his last thought is to warn the others to make sure no-one else is hurt.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Shang Yu is the Aries Star Master and his special skill is superspeed. Not only can he run really fast, but it's enough that the world around him can come to a standstill as he zooms around. He's even able to change the position people are in before he finishes using his powers, it's that fast.
Other than that, due to his young age, Shang Yu is still learning the basics such as combat, common sense and tactics. Lucky for him his companion in fire is Leo, the General herself and at some point he'll get to learn how to become an amazing fighter. For now though he's just probably average.
